‘Blue Dot’ is the new single from award winning composer Steve Luck. It is a meditative solo piano piece inspired by the famous Pale Blue Dot image of earth taken in 1990 by the Voyager 1 spacecraft from 3.8 billion miles away. Scientist Carl Sagan said of the image “There is perhaps no better demonstration of the folly of human conceits than this distant image of our tiny world…our posturing’s, our imagined self-importance, the delusion that we have some privileged position in the Universe, are challenged by this point of pale light.”
It is an awe inspiring and humbling image, the essence of which is captured in the piece. Performed quietly on a felted piano, the piece has a hushed and intimate quality. In the introduction the beautiful repetitive ostinato figure, reminiscent of a satellite in a slow orbit, is complemented by gentle higher notes – an aural representation of points of light in the night sky. Warm, rich, comforting, widely spaced lower chords create a reflective mood as well as a sense of limitlessness.
The piece is released to all digital streaming services on July 29th 2022 and is accompanied by a beautiful video featuring timelapse footage of the night sky ,taken by Steve in Northumberland.
